Boat Insurance in Sarasota and Manatee County

Florida does not require boat insurance. With more registered vessels than any other state, that’s a striking gap — and it means the decision is entirely yours, which is exactly why it’s worth thinking about properly.

When you’ll be required to carry it anyway

The state doesn’t require it, but plenty of other people do:

  • Your lender, if the boat is financed — essentially always
  • Your marina or dock, which will typically require liability coverage and name itself as an additional insured
  • Some communities and clubs with private slips

“Isn’t my boat covered by my homeowners policy?”

Partly, and only for small boats. A typical Florida homeowners policy extends limited coverage to boats under a certain length and horsepower — think a small skiff or a dinghy — usually with a property limit around $1,000 to $1,500 and little or no liability coverage on the water.

For anything most people around here would call a boat, that coverage runs out immediately. A center console, a bay boat, anything with a real outboard on it needs its own policy.

What a real boat policy covers

  • Hull and machinery — the boat itself, and whether it’s insured at agreed value or actual cash value, which matters enormously at claim time
  • Liability — injuries and damage you cause on the water
  • Uninsured boater — the marine equivalent of UM, and relevant for the same reason
  • Wreck removal — frequently required, frequently expensive, and frequently overlooked
  • Fuel spill liability — federal exposure that can dwarf the value of the boat
  • Towing and assistance on the water
  • Personal effects, fishing gear and electronics

Pay attention to navigational limits — where the policy will and won’t cover you — and to named-storm haul-out provisions, which are common on Gulf Coast policies and can require you to have a plan on file.

The boater education card

Separate from insurance, and often confused with it: anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 must have a Boating Safety Education Identification Card to operate a vessel with 10 horsepower or more in Florida. That applies to visitors as well as residents.

Getting it right for the Gulf

Boat policies vary more between carriers than almost any other line we write — agreed value versus actual cash value, hurricane provisions, navigational limits. Two policies at similar prices can be wildly different at claim time.
